Liquid Chromatography - Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS)
Introduction
LCMS is particularly useful for samples that are not volatile enough for GCMS. The individual components of a mixture are separated on a column (as in HPLC) before passing into the Mass Spectrometer. The high resolution mass analysis can prove a useful aid in elucidation of compounds.
Applications
- High Resolution Mass Spectrometry
- Separation of mixtures and identification of substituents
Instrumentation
- Waters LC with photodiode array detector
- Autosampler Facility
- VG Mass Labs Spectrometer with electrospray (ESI) and
- Atmospheric pressure chemical ionisation (APCI) interfaces
