Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM)
Introduction
Electron microscopy has a multitude of uses in virtually all areas of science and technology where imaging and surface analysis to 1 micron depth is required. The instrument also has an EDX facility to provide qualitative information on elements present.
Applications
- Biological - e.g. imaging of cells
- Geological - e.g. imaging and analysis of rock specimens
- Electronics Industry - Imaging of microelectronic components
- Metallurgy - Analysis of defects in castings, investigation of uniformity of alloys.
Instrumentation
- JEOL 6310 Scanning Electron Microscope fitted with an Oxford Instruments ISIS x-ray micro analysis system.
