Gas Chromatography - Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS)
Introduction
The hyphenated technique GC-MS combines the separating power of mass spectrometry, with the sensitivity and characterisation applications of mass spectrometry. After injection and volatilisation, the individual components of a mixture are separated on a GC Column and then characterised using a mass selective detector. In many cases the components can be directly identified from their mass spectra using the online database.
Applications
- Analysis of environmental SVOC samples
- Characterisation of reaction products
- Quantitative determinations
Instrumentation
- Hewlett Packard Gas Chromatograph with MSD detector
- 100 capacity autosampler
- Online database of compounds with computerised search facility
