Prospects Planner. This is a computer based career guidance software package on the Graduate Prospects web site. It can help you assess your skills, interests and motivation and link these to careers that match your profile. Later sections can assess your chances of getting into different career areas and enable you to research these further. You can discuss your results with a Careers Adviser. Team roles. R.M. Belbin (in Management Teams: why they succeed or fail, 1994, and in Team Roles at Work, 1996) describes the results of many experiments he set up in carrying out research to discover different predominant roles within groups. There are typical strengths and weaknesses associated with each role, and these indicate the skills you are likely to bring to team-working. His work has been very influential and his questionnaire is extensively used in personal and professional development training. Check out careers workshops to see when the next 'Exploring Your Personality - MBTI' workshops are offered. The Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) is a psychometric instrument based on Carl Jung's theory of personality types. There are no right or wrong answers. The MBTI simply sorts people into one of 16 types, each of which has differing gifts and strengths. This is an excellent tool for understanding and valuing oneself and others. Some employers use MBTI for personal effectiveness, teambuilding and management development. Counsellors use it for self awareness and relationship building. The Careers Service offers it to give you clues to the type of work methods and environments you would prefer - not as a prescriptive model but as a valuable aid to your own reflective understanding. As of October 2007 the Careers Service does not have anyone qualified to set these questionnaires but that may change in the future. What Color is Your Parachute is a book, available in the Careers Service, which takes the reader through the job hunting process. One part of the associated website has a range of links to sites which may help you assess your skills and personality. Another page has links to career choice questionnaires The Art of Building Windmills (Hawkins), Be Your Own Career Consultant (Pyke and Neath) and Build Your Own Rainbow (Hopson and Scally) can also help you focus these issues: all on reference in the Careers Service.
