Postgraduate Options- General

Law graduates also undertake a range of other postgraduate courses, whether full-time or through one of the increasing number of part-time and distance-learning study options. All of which means it's a good idea to choose your course and explore funding courses carefully. Also, be clear about your motives and consider the longer-term career implications of your choice.

Two common reasons for doing post grad study

Here are some commonly cited reasons given by postgraduate applicants for choosing postgraduate study. Click on the statements for comments to help you weigh up the costs and benefits for your own situation.

  1. It will enhance my employability
  2. I have enjoyed my subject and wish to gain further specialist knowledge in it

      This can be a powerful and potentially valid reason. Careerwise it could lead to teaching your subject in further or higher education, or to a careers in research.

      Occasionally this rationale can obscure other less satisfactory motivations such as:

      • you don't know what else to do
      • you are waiting for the labour market to pick up after recession
      • you don't feel ready for work
      • you want another year of student life.
      Remember that recruiters will scrutinise your decision to do a post graduate qualification. Weak reasons will fail to convince and will not enhance your credibility with employers.
