Approximately one fifth of UK graduates in 2002 enrolled onto some form of postgraduate academic study or vocational training as their principal activity - and there is also a continuing increase in part-time, self-financed courses. All of which means it's a good idea to choose your course and explore funding sources carefully. Also be clear about your motivations and consider the longer-term career implications of your choice.

Two common reasons for doing post grad study

Here are some commonly cited reasons given by postgraduate applicants for choosing postgraduate study. Click on the statements for comments to help you weigh up the costs and benefits for your own situation.

  1. It will enhance my employability
  2. I have enjoyed my subject and wish to gain further specialist knowledge in it

This can be a powerful and potentially valid reason. Careerwise it could lead to teaching your subject in further or higher education, or to Research and Development if your subject is in the Sciences or Engineering.

Occasionally this rationale can obscure other less satisfactory motivations such as:

      • you don't know what else to do
      • you are waiting for the labour market to pick up after recession
      • you don't feel ready for work
      • you want another year of student life.
Remember that recruiters will scrutinise your decision to do a post graduate qualification. Weak reasons will fail to convince and will not enhance your credibility with employers.
